This is the Part 3 and last post of this series.
Problem #3: Scrum Masters are not well trained
The problem statement is that the Scrum Masters don’t have enough knowledge to perform the role effectively. I have seen two possible scenarios in India:
First one is that the organizations don’t train Scrum Masters on Scrum but they want the teams to implement Scrum. These teams learn on their own and try to implement what they think Scrum is. The second one is that the Scrum Masters who are trained, some are even Certified Scrum Masters, still don’t understand the concepts well. I have seen many Scrum Masters those fall into second category.
For Scrum Masters to be effective, it is essential that they possess in-depth knowledge of Scrum. Without knowledge, the Scrum Master won’t get immediate respect from the team nor from the management. It is not enough to get certified (because it is pretty easy), rather it is more important that they have essential knowledge of Scrum. Also, it would be beneficial to be part of a local Agile user group or such community to learn from others. This will give a deeper understanding of various issues in implementing Scrum and how other teams solved them.
In conclusion, to be an effective Scrum Master, it is going to be journey and won’t happen overnight. There are many skills to acquire and many people to deal with.
